Nitrous oxide - No laughing matter
Nitrous oxide causes a noise nuisance and the small metal canisters that hold it are often left on the floor as litter, which creates a mess on our streets.
Nitrous oxide is a colourless gas that is commonly used by dentists and medical professionals to sedate patients. It is also used as a propellant for whipped cream, and in the automotive industry to enhance engine performance. It is also used by people to feel intoxicated or high.
The gas is inhaled, typically by discharging nitrous gas cartridges into a balloon, or directly into the mouth. Inhaling nitrous oxide produces a rapid rush of euphoria and feeling of floating or excitement for a short period of time.
Prolonged use may result in
- Memory loss
- Vitamin B12 depletion
- Ringing in the ears
- Incontinence
- Numbness and limb spasms
- Weak immune system
- Depression
- Psychological dependence
- Psychosis
